Chapter Seven

Denver

O’Malley’s is decked the fuck out. Orange and black streamers hang from the ceiling, the fans, the chairs. Jack-o-lanterns are on the bar top and a projector is flashing ghosts all over the back wall. The lights over the bottles are normally white, but for Halloween they’re orange and purple. Everyone is in costume. Women are walking around in high heels, short skirts, and low-cut tops. Animal ears and cat tails adorn more than one woman. Normally, I’d be here for the scenery, but tonight, I have the sexiest woman here on my arm and couldn’t care less about anyone else in the bar. I want to buy her a drink, make her dance with me when the band starts, and take her home a little tipsy to lie her on my bed and fuck her the way she deserves instead of a quickie in my truck like two teens on prom night.

“Bond. Denver Bond.” My buddy Ace, the owner’s brother, comes at me as soon as we step in. I tighten my hold on Cassi as he approaches. Ace is dressed in all red with a black nose drawn on his face and red floppy ears on the side of his head. He raises his beer.

“Clifford.” I shake my head at him.

“You found one hell of a Bond girl. How’d you find this pretty little thing up on the mountain alone?” Ace takes Cassi’s hand from mine and kisses it. I clench my jaw. Ace would never, but after being inside her, it’s hard to put shit in perspective. “Relax, Den. I don’t wanna steal your woman. We both know I can, we don’t need to prove it!” He claps me on the back and winks at me. I take a breath and try not to lose my shit.

“He flew in and swept me off my feet, right?” Cassi leans into me, putting a hand on my chest and kissing my chin. The possessive wave that washed over me vanishes. I kiss her head.

“Sure did. Women like airplanes. Go figure.” I smile, looking down at this amazing woman I just met. How did she know what I needed to hear?

“Wait til you see my truck.” He waggles his brows at her and she giggles.

“Move on, Ace. Not happening!” I jerk my chin at him, and he shrugs dramatically, turning to head back to the bar. His brother raises a beer to me, the band starts up, and his bartender, Roni waves. I wave back and make my way to them. I let Cassi take the stool and stand behind her, wrapping an arm around her middle and pressing my front to her back. The guy next to me is dressed as Jack Skellington and he’s yelling over the music at a scarecrow. Halloween at O’Malley’s may be my favorite. Roni appears with her bright green hair twisted in ringlets, red dots on her cheeks, and makeup to look like a hinged jaw. Her dress reminds me of those Raggedy Anne dolls.
